Fluid flow chambers

Fluid Flow Chambers

Precision-engineered flumes and recirculating flow chambers that reproduce controlled laminar or turbulent flow for organism behavior, biomechanics, sediment transport and sensor testing — from benchtop teaching units to research-grade systems over 50 feet long.

What is a flow chamber?

A controlled river on your lab bench

A flow chamber (or flume) recirculates water through a clear test section at a precise, repeatable velocity, so you can study how organisms, structures and sediments respond to flow.

Pumps drive water through a flow straightener that removes swirl and turbulence, delivering uniform flow through the viewing section before it returns to the reservoir.

  • Laminar or turbulent flow, set and logged by software
  • High-clarity acrylic test sections for observation and imaging
  • Temperature, water quality and lighting control as options

Applications

What researchers use flow chambers for

Behavior & swimming performance

Rheotaxis, station-holding and swimming performance under controlled currents.

Biomechanics & drag

Forces, feeding and attachment of organisms and models in moving water.

Benthic & larval ecology

Mussel and oyster beds, larval settlement and dispersal, boundary layers.

Sediment transport

Erosion, deposition and bedform studies with repeatable flow.

Sensor & device testing

Calibrate and validate probes, tags and robotic devices in known flow.

Teaching labs

Visualize laminar vs. turbulent flow and boundary layers in class.

No set size? No problem.

Enter the dimensions you need and we'll quote it.

The Alpha Flow Chamber is built to order from 1 ft to 50+ ft long with cross-sections up to 8 × 8 ft. Type in your test-section length, width and depth in the builder — an engineer sizes the pumps and returns an itemized quote.

How to choose

Four questions that size your chamber

01

How big is your subject?

Test-section size should give organisms or models room without wall effects — usually several body lengths.

02

How fast does water need to move?

Maximum velocity sets pump sizing. Low-speed control is retained on every configuration.

03

Do you need temperature control?

Ambient, a stable set-point, or rapid thermal cycling at up to 5 °C/min.

04

How will you verify flow?

Calibrated pump control, flow sensors, ADV probes or PIV flow calibration.

Powered by Aquafab Workbench

Program the current. Record every run.

Every Aquafab flow chamber runs on Aquafab Workbench, so velocity programs, calibration and data logging work the same on a teaching flume as on a 50-foot research system.

Velocity programs

Step, ramp or cycle flow over time — including tidal patterns — and run them the same way every trial.

Calibrated flow

Guided PID calibration, plus optional PIV flow calibration so you program in cm/s, not pump percentage.

Logged & monitored

Time-stamped set-points and sensor data, with alerts when something needs attention.

With every system

More than equipment.

Engineering review

Every configuration is checked by an engineer before we quote or build.

Factory-tested

Assembled, leak-tested and run in Cincinnati before it ships.

Documentation

Manuals, calibration records and Aquafab Workbench software.

Lifetime support

Direct access to the engineers who built your system.

FAQ

Flow chamber questions

What's the difference between the Alpha and Teaching flow chambers?

Teaching Flow Chambers come in three standard sizes and plug into a laptop — ideal for classrooms and pilot work. Alpha Flow Chambers are research systems built to your dimensions, velocity range and options.

Can I get a chamber in a size that isn't listed?

Yes — that's the norm for Alpha systems. Enter your dimensions in the Alpha builder and we'll quote it.

Can you calibrate a flume we already own?

Yes. PIV Flow Calibration works with chambers you already own, including other manufacturers' equipment — as a kit your team runs in Aquafab Workbench, with optional on-site setup support.

Don't see exactly what you need?

We'll build it.

Most of our systems start as a conversation. Describe your experiment and we'll design around it.
